Mannie Manim has worked in theatre for more than 50 years as lighting designer and administrator, and enjoyed a long association with Johannesburg's Market Theatre. His lighting credits include The Island at the Old Vic in London, in Toronto where he won Best Lighting Design, at the Kennedy Center in Washington and at BAM in New York. He has lit the stage for Carmen and The Mysteries for Wiltons Music Hall in London, the International Theatre Festival in Perth, the Queens Theatre in London and the World Stage Festival in Toronto.
Other productions include Athol Fugard's Sorrows and Rejoicings, John Kani's Nothing But The Truth and Faust. He also designed the lighting for Cape Town Opera's ShowBoat for the Cape Town season as well as in Sweden and Germany. He is a recipient of the Shirley Moss Award, the South African Institute of Theatre Technology Award, the first Vita Award for the Most Enterprising Producer, Naledi Liftetime Award and the Vita Best Original Lighting Award ten times.
ln 1990 he was made Chevalier des Artes et des Lettres by the French Government and in 1996 he was awarded a gold medal for Theatre Developmentom the South African Academy of Arts and Science. He is the Director of the Baxter Theare Centre at the University of Cape Town.
