Marie has been raised in a regiment by the amiable Sergeant Sulpice. Her eye has been caught by te young captain Tonio, who once saved her life, but little does she know that her affection is reciprocated. Tonio has been following her regiment, but even though they love each other they can never marry, because her husband has to be a member of the regiment. Tonio duly enlists but their love is again threatened when the marquise de Birkenfels, believing soldiers to be unsitable companions for a young woman, orders Marie´s removal from the regiment.
At the marquise´s chateau. Marie is growing tired of dancing and etiquette lessons. Her only pleauser is the presence of the recuperating Sulpice. Harrassed by the marquise´s insistence that she embrace "respectability" and marry a foppish duke, Marie is overjoyed when her regiment visits the chateau. Tonio, who has been promoted for acts of valour, confronts the marquise, demanding that he be allowed to marry Marie, but the marquise is adamant. However, at dinner she shocks everyone by revealing that she is Marie´s mother and consenting to her marriage. The opera ends with a hymn of praise to France.
