Peter Cazalet was born in Zambia and educated in Johannesburg, South Africa. After graduating as an architect from the University of Cape Town, he was a principal dancer with various ballet companies in Britain. He started designing for ballet productions in the sixties and, on his return to South Africa in 1972, he began to design for the former performing arts councils. He headed the CAPAB* (now Artscape) Design Department for 18 years. His work includes numerous ballets, dramas, musicals and over twenty operas. He has often worked as designer in Britain and the USA and, more recently, in Japan, Germany and Britain. His most recent set and costumes designing for Cape Town Opera includes Cavalleria Rusticana, I Pagliacci and Faust. He has received many awards, including the Neierburg Prize for the Cape Province and two AA Vita Awards.
