Tid och plats: Memfis och Tebe på faraonernas tid

Egypt is at war with Ethiopia. Radames is appointed to lead the Egyptian army against the southern foe. If he is victorious he will marry Aida, the slave girl he loves. But Amneris - the pharaoh's daughter - also loves Radames. Aida is her slave and an Ethiopian whose father, King Amonasro, leads the Ethiopian army. Aida's dilemma is that her beloved Radames is to wage war against her own father. Radames returns in victory to the tones of the famous triumphant march. Amonasro is among the Ethiopian prisoners but hides his identity. The pharaoh rewards Radames for his victory by allowing him to marry Amneris - a great honour but not exactly what Radames had in mind.

Naturally, Aida is inconsolable, Radames and Aida meet the night before the wedding and decide to flee together. Radames reveals the Egyptian plan of attack whereupon Amonasro declares his true identity. Aida and Amonasro flee, leaving Radames devastated at having betrayed his country. Amneris implores Radames to defend himself against the accusations of high treason but he is silent. He would rather die than live without Aida and is sentenced to death by being entombed alive. Down in the Temple of Volcano he prepares to die, but suddenly sees Aida. She has crept unseen into the vault before him...
